Defend Our Right to Expression Through Arts Advocacy
Life without the arts is a life devoid of expression. The arts are the most powerful means by which humans can express their innermost feelings in ways that transcend time and environment.
The continued notion that the arts are expendable is the most damaging not only to the support of the arts but, ultimately, damaging to society itself. We must continue advocating for the importance of the arts in our communities because, across the board, those individuals, families, and communities who are involved in the arts thrive and progress.
When children are exposed to music, dance, theatre, or the visual arts from early childhood, they feel more comfortable expressing themselves in artistic modes or even non-artistic modes. Whether or not the children eventually grow up in pursuit of a professional life in the arts is not important. What is important, however, is that the children learn that the arts are a healthy vehicle for self-expression, for those that learn this are more likely to grow up to be well-adjusted adults. Given the opportunity to reap the benefits of learning the discipline, achievement, self-expression, and communication that is an inherent part of our wonderful youth orchestras is sure to, at the very least, provide each child with some insights towards choosing the right path in their life. Therefore, it is imperative that we, in the arts, devote an ever-increasing amount of energy into educating children and adults, pressing home the point that art and music are needed, in fact, as a fundamental basic in life.
